Trello: an evaluation

Trello is an online website used for organizing information between a group of people. This is done though separate boards, each of which can contain lists of tasks, ideas, or other information. this allows information to be sorted and organized by multiple parties, ensuring that everyone is aware of the current state of things.

One example of how Trello can be used is the organization of concepts/ideas before starting a project. Pictured above is a board that my classmate and I are using to organize our ideas for a game jam centered around mental health. Here, we used the lists to represent different ideas, and added components representing the components of those ideas, allowing us both to understand the core of the concepts we come up with.

In a game development context, this can be very useful, as it's very important for a team to all be on the same page regarding their vision for their game. A Trello board could allow them to have a repository cataloguing ideas on certain story elements, mechanics, characters, etc, ensuring that all contributors to those elements are in common understanding on how those elements should turn out.

One weakness of Trello is that sometimes, direct communication between a team is just more effective. While developing Horrors Below, our team used Trello for a short time, but quickly abandoned, as we  all sat next to each other, and it was simply easier to communicate directly with one another rather than using Trello.

In the future, I can't see Trello being very useful. as a data repository, it does a decent enough job, but as a communication tool, it falls flat, as direct communication with teammates is simply more effective.
